If you’re a frequent traveler to Europe or planning your next trip soon, make sure you’re up to date on the new entry requirements for the United Kingdom and European Union countries.
The UK’s Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)
As of January 8, 2025, a new form of travel authorization has been put into place in the UK. It is called the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA). Anyone traveling to anywhere in the United Kingdom is required to have an account. It is best to apply at least a month before your travel plans to ensure you secure your authorization.
What You Need To Know:
Cost: £16 (approximately $21.13.) Since you will be paying with a debit or credit card, your payment will automatically be converted to U.S. dollars.
Application: You can apply online or through the UK ETA app
What You’ll Need:
A valid passport
Credit or debit card for payment
A clear photo of your face
Your ETA is linked to your passport, so there’s no paper document to carry. You will simply show your passport when traveling to the UK. It is valid for two years or until your passport expires—whichever comes first. During that time, you can travel to the UK as many times as you like without reapplying.
You can access the website to apply for an ETA here:
Similar to the United Kingdom’s ETA, the European Union has introduced its own system for managing border entry and exit. Unlike the ETA, you don’t need to apply or take any action for the EU’s new electronic system. It operates automatically when you cross the border. However, it’s important to be aware of how it works so you know what to expect when arriving in or departing from EU countries.
The European Union’s New Electronic Entry System
Nearly 30 countries in the European Union (EU) are moving away from traditional passport stamps and switching to a biometric and electronic border entry system known as the Entry/Exit System (EES). While it is already in effect, it will be fully implemented by April 10, 2026.
The EES is an automated technological system designed to register those traveling to the EU for a short amount of time. It digitally records when and where people enter and leave the EU, using technology such as facial recognition and fingerprints. Its goal is to modernize border management and make travel into the EU safer and simpler.
The Benefits of EES:
Reduced wait times: Automated self-service options will allow you to provide your information in advance, making border crossings quicker and more efficient.
Enhanced security: The digital system helps border officers and law enforcement authorities identify potential threats and crime.
No more stamps: Your passport won’t be stamped. All entries and exits will be recorded electronically.

As global travel becomes more digitized, both the UK and the EU are taking steps to make border crossings faster, safer, and more efficient.
